Chinese Investment in Indonesia Jumps 22% in Q1 2026, Nearly Half Going Downstream

Indonesian business outlet Warta Ekonomi reports that Chinese investment in Indonesia reached USD2.2 billion (around Rp38 trillion) in the first quarter of 2026, up 22% year on year — well ahead of the 8.5% growth in Indonesia's overall foreign direct investment.

By country of origin, Singapore ranked first with USD4.6 billion, Hong Kong second with USD2.7 billion and mainland China third with USD2.2 billion.

Roughly Rp17.5 trillion (about USD1.02 billion) of the Chinese total went into priority downstream industries, close to half of the amount. Between 2021 and 2025, cumulative Chinese investment in Indonesia reached USD34.4 billion and created more than 700,000 local jobs.

Rosan Perkasa Roeslani, Minister of Investment and Downstream Industry and CEO of Danantara, visited China in early April with a focus on renewable energy technology and innovation. Solar manufacturing, EV batteries, energy storage systems and two-wheeler production are seen as the next areas of interest.
